This fan-shaped mushroom is commonly found growing in overlapping clusters on dead wood with multi coloured caps resembling turkey tails. The top is zoned, usually in shades of brown, white, grey or blue (this is variable), and it sports hairy bands. The underside of the cap is white and shows minute pores which do not discolour after scratching.
Turkey Tail is widely distributed throughout southern africa and is fairly common on dead stumps and logs of broad-leafed trees. It is an important wood rotting species which causes severe white rot in the wood. The tough fruit bodies are fairly resitant to drought and often appear in rather exposed situations in the rainy season. They usually revive after a dry spell but do not survive from one season to the next.
